Web 2 and Web 3 has been the most trending terms among developers these days. In this article, i’m going to explain what they mean by web 2 and web 3 and i will give the major differences between them.
What is Web 2?
Web2 refers to the version of the internet most of us know today. An internet dominated by companies that provide services in exchange for your personal data.
Web 2 has been the most widely known version of the internet which many organizations adopt. Web 2 started to become popular in 2004, when the first Web 2 conference was held.
Web 2 was brought to modify the way web pages are designed and used during Web 1.0. The transition is beneficial but it does not seem that when the changes occur. Web 2 is an enhanced version of Web 1.0
The web browser technologies used in Web 2 development includes HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and JavaScript frameworks. Recently, AJAX and JavaScript frameworks have become a very popular means of creating web 2 sites.
Five major features of Web 2.0:
- Dynamic content that is responsive to user input.
- Free sorting of information, permits users to retrieve and classify the information collectively.
- Information flows between the site owner and site users by means of evaluation & online commenting.
- Web access leads to concern different, from the traditional Internet user base to a wider variety of users.
- Developed APIs to allow self-usage, such as by a software application.

The Web 3.0 definition can be expanded as follows: data will be interconnected in a decentralized way, which would be a huge leap forward to our current generation of the internet (Web 2.0), where data is mostly stored in centralized repositories.
Web 3.0 is the upcoming third generation of the internet where websites and apps will be able to process information in a smart human-like way through technologies like machine learning (ML), Big Data, decentralized ledger technology (DLT), etc. Web 3.0 was originally called the Semantic Web by World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, and was aimed at being a more autonomous, intelligent, and open internet.
Web 3.0 is also known as the Semantic Web.
So the main key in Web 3.0 is decentralized.
What do decentralization mean?
Decentralization is a core tenet of Web3, and it promises improvements on many fronts. First off, there is no central authority controlling content and imposing indiscriminate censorship. The more decentralized a platform is, the more censorship-resistant it becomes.
Differences between Web 2 and Web 3
- Decentralization: The major difference is decentralizing of data, in Web 2, data are centralized in a known database which is controlled by some officials, while in Web 3 data are decentralized and not managed or controlled by some officials.
- Trustless and Permissionless: Web3 is trustless and permissionless, which means participants can interact without permission from a trusted intermediary or governing body. Applications in Web3 run on decentralized peer-to-peer networks. That’s why they’re called decentralized applications, or dApps, rather than “apps.”
- Connectivity: With Web3, content is more connected than in the preceding eras. An increasing number of everyday devices in the “internet of things” (IoT) will be accessing multiple dApps that live on blockchains.
